Built in the year 1835, by one of the richest landlord of Bengal during that period, Raja Rajendra Mullick Bahadur, with a passion for collecting works of Art – Marble Palace in Kolkata is an exquisitely engineered palatial mansion. It’s sheer magnificence and scintillating artistry captivate visitor in a state of trance. The Birtish period, in which the building was constructed, is reminiscent from the articles that are contained in it and also by the style of architecture. The Mullick family had close links with the British who supported them in its formation.  This beautiful building was christened as Marble Palace by Lord Minto. As 126 types of marbles accumulated from different corner of the countr were employed to give shape to this one of a kind architectural delight.  Marble Palace is an exquisite Art – Gallery and it houses the marvelous objects of Arts, Sculptures, Pictures and Oil Paintings.
 
Marble Palace is basically Neo-Classical in style, while the plan with its open courtyard is largely traditional Bengali. Adjacent to the courtyard, there is a “ Thakur Dalan”, or a place of worship for members of the family. The three storied building has tall fluted Corinthian Pillars and Ornamented Verandas with fire works and sloping roofs built in the style of a Chinese pavilion. The high iron gates open out to a large circular lawn, which has an aviary and an intricately carved marble fountain at the centre. Beyond there is a Rock Garden and. The lush green lawn in front of it is clad with statues of Hindu Gods, The Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, the great explorer Christopher Columbus, Lord Buddha and some lions.
 
Marble Palace, which is branded as one of the Heritage Buildings in Kolkata. This magnficient building houses artifacts imported from Europe, oil paintings, having authentic version as well as imitations, and a diverse medley of Chinese and Japanese porcelain cumulatively contributing to the crowning glories. The palace has also a huge collection of numerous art works, statues, oil paintings brought in from many European countries.
 
There are some important statues and paintings on display here, which include the works of Rubens, Titian, Gainsborough, and Sir Joshua Reynolds. There are also beautiful chandeliers, European antiques, Venetian glass, old pianos, and blue china vases. The two paintings by Rubens, "The Marriage of St. Catherine" and "The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian" is a must see.
 
Another hallmark of the Marble Palace is a pocket-sized zoo, housing birds and herbivorous animals. This curious assembly of the fauna can enlighten a visitor with data on the natural world.
