
Kaziranga National Park
Located in the heart of Assam and bounded by the Mikir Hills on the South and the mighty Brahmaputra river on the north Kaziranga National Park has the largest concentration of the One Horned Rhinos in the Indian Sub Continent. Spread over 430 Sq. Kms Kaziranga National Park lies partly in Golaghat district and partly in Nagaon District of Assam. Kaziranga National Park is the oldest reserved forest in Asaam. It was declared Wildlife Sanctuary in 1950 and accorded the status of a National Park in 1974.
Kaziranga National Park’s swamps and grasslands with tall thickest of Elephant Grass and patches of Evergreen Forest support a large number of wild animals to survive. Apart from grasses and forests Kaziranga National Park has an abundant cover of Water Lilies, Water Hyacinth and Lotus, providing a beautiful look to the surrounding to the park. Each monsoon, the Brahmaputra breaches its banks and floods the park, breathing life back into the parched land and replenishing the 200 shallow lakes with water and fish.
The Kaziranga National Park houses around 15 species of India’s threatened mammals species. The best known and famous resident of course is the Rhinoceros Unicornis (One Horned Rhino). Apart from One Horned Rhinos, Kaziranga National Park is also natural habitat of wild Buffaloes, Wild Boars, elephants, Barasinghas (Swamp & Hog Dear), leopards, Tigers, Hoolock Gibbons, Capped Langur, rock Python and Monitor Lizards.
Kaziranga National Park is a birding paradise; the grasslands are a raptor country that can be seen on safari makes a remarkable experience. These include the Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black-Shouldered Kite, Black Kite, Brahminy Kite, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, White Tailed Eagle, Grey-Headed Fishing Eagle, Himalayan Griffon, etc. Huge numbers of migratory birds descend on the parks lakes and marshy areas during winters, including Greylag Geese, Bar-Headed Geese, Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall, Falcated Duck, Red-Crested Pochard and Northern Shoveller.
The vast open makes Kaziranga National Park very accessible and wildlife viewing fairly pleasurable. March – April is the best time for animal watching. Trained elephants are available for Jungle Safari for seeing Rhinos at close range. Authorized and trained Mahouts guide visitors through the park, thus making a trip to this National Park a very pleasurable experience.
Kaziranga National Park is 217 km from the state capital, Guwahati. Nearest Airport is Jorhat, which is 96 km away from the Park.
