Overview of Sandakphu :

The highest point of West Bengal situated on the border of West Bengal of India and Nepal at an altitude of around 12,000 ft and in the area of Singalila National Park. The name Sandakphu – which means "Height of the Poison Plant" derives from poisonous plants that grow near the top. Any clear day anyone can be mesmerized by the awesome view of Mt. Kanchenjunga (3rd Highest peak in the world) and other neighbouring peaks. On the right beautiful Snow peaks of Bhutan and China are clearly visible .Watching Mt. Everest ( The highest Peak in the world ), Lhotse and Makalu is really a dream to mountain lovers and those are distinct from here. While going to Sandakphu, some parts of the routs enter into Nepal. Another attraction of this area is the old Landover introduced by British people in the year 1948. Traveling up to Sandakhu (Some time up to Phalut) by Landrover is a memorable experience for those tourists who are not able to walk. There are lots of trekking route from Sandakphu and Phalut for the amateur and professional trekkers.

Sandakphu - Phalut trek route starts from Maneybhanjan - a small village in Darjeeling hills. The distance between Darjeeling to Sandakphu is 59 kms. Trekkers can make a base in either Darjeeling or Maneybhanjan before starting Sandakhu - Phalut trek. A season trekker can make the journey within two days. But for normal or ameteur trekkers it is better to cover the distance between Maneybhanjan to Sandakphu in three days.

Day 01 : Siliguri / NJP / Bagdogra Airport to Timbure : Timbure Altitude 6800 ft / Distance from Pick Up Point 6 Hrs ( By Vehicle)

Receive and transfer to Timbure. Lunch at Maneybhanjan. Further proceed to Timbure. Timbure is located on the popular Sandakphu - Phalut trekking route. The village is full of natural beauty. Overnight stay at Timbure.

Day 02 : Timbure to Gorkhey ( Via Bhanjung) : Trek Distance - 14 Kms / Average Time to reach Destination - Approx 6 to 7 Hrs / Gorkhey Altitude - 7700 Ft

Trekking start from Timbure after early breakfast. Gorkhey is located in a beautiful valley on the Sikkim - Bengal border. The village is settled in between Varsey Rhododendron Sanctuary and Singalila National Park. The walking trail from Timburey to Gorkhey passes through rice fields, jungles, birding trails and breath taking view of surrounding mountains. Gorkhey is also known as Silent Valley and is very popular for Sandakphu trekkers. The village is named after a small stream named Gorkhey Khola cutting through the valley. The prisitine beauty of the Gorkhey is really mesmerizing. Overnight stay at Gorkhey.

Day 03 : Gorkhey to Phalut : Trek Distance : 15 Kms / Average Time to reach Destination - Approx 7 to 8 Hrs / Phalut Altitude - 11500 Ft

After early breakfast trekking starts. The maximum part of the Trekking trail goes through forests and from the very beginning the trail starts ascending. At some points it is tough to negotiate trail’s gradients. At the time of passing forests numerous Rhododendron and Oak are seen here. Keep the steady pace while ascending.

Phalut is the second highest point of the state - West Bengal. On the way to Phalut almost entire Singalila Park is visible. From Phalut the view of Kanchenjunga Massif is stunningly beautiful. Overnight stay at Phalut.

Day 04 : Phalut to Sandakphu / Aahl : Trek Distance : 21 Kms / Average Time to reach Destination - Approx 4 to 5 Hrs / Sandakphu Altitude - 11926 Ft

After watching one of the most stunning sunrise on Mt. Kanchenjunga from Phalut in the very early morning it is time to proceed towards Sandakphu / Aahl. The trail leads along with a ridge on Singalila Range and considered one of the most beautiful trek routes in Eastern Himalayas. Burned silver fir forest and colourful rhododendron trees decorate the route and to offer a beautiful sight. Omnipresence of towering Kanchenjunga and glimpses of Mt. Everest are mesmerizing. There are some ups and downs throughout the route, but not very hard to cross those hurdles.

Sabarkum comes ( 3526 mt) comes after 7 kms trek. It is a junction with a stone house with blown of roof on the top of a small ridge.

Aahl or Aal is a spectacular view point, specially sunset view on Kanchenjunga on the Singalila range. It’s just 2 kms ahead of Sandakphu.

The trekking trail passes through Singalila National Park. Singlalila National Park is the highest National Park is West Bengal, which spreads over 2400 mt to 3650 mt. above the sea level and covers on an area of 79 sq. Kms. This virgin forest offers the spectacular view of the Himalayan mountains and enriched mainly by alpine, changes with the range in altitude. Trees found in this national park are Rhododendron, Magnolia, Oak, Hemlock, Silver Fir, Juniper, Mailing Bamboo etc and number of wild animal like Leopard, Red Panda, Barking Deer, Pangolin etc. It also hosts of varieties of birds like Cuckoo, Hornbills, Pigeons, Golden Eagles and large number of Migratory Birds.

Kalipokhri comes in between. There is a small lake in Kalipokhri which holds the same name, The colour of the water of the lake is surprisingly dark and considered to be sacred by the local people. The lake is fenced by Buddhist prayer flags and gives the view of Sandakphu Peak.

Gairibas a small place houses a rhododendron research centre and has a detailed accounting of the various varieties of Rhododendrons available in the region.

Day 06 : Tumling to Dhotre : Trek Distance - 6 Kms / Average Time to reach Destination - Approx 2 to 3 Hrs / Dhotre Altitude - 8400 Ft Further proceed to NJP / Siliguri / Darjeeling by Car

Watch the sunrise on Sleeping Budhdha. Have the breakfast and start trekking for last destination , Dhotrey. It’s completely downward trek passes through Singalila National Park.
