Nathu La

Nathu-La situated on the old Silk Route at an elevation of 14,200 ft and 56 kms away from Gangtok town is an important Indo – China border. Nathu La is one of the highest motorable routes in India and richly covered with varieties of alpine flora and fauna. Most part throughout the year this tranquil border post is covered with a thick layer of snow.

In Tibetan language "Nathu" means listening ears and "La" stands for pass. Nathu-La had an immense importance for trading between India and China. But it was closed during the bitter Indo–China war in 1961. On 6th July, 2006 this border post was opened again for resuming the trade between two countries and as per the agreement this post keeps open for four months for the year for smooth business. Nathu La is one of the three trading border posts between these countries.

Nathu-La is worth visit. This area is fully controlled by Indian Army and a special permit is required to visit this place. Nathu-La is open for five days in a week, ie. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday only for Indian tourists. Nathu La is a wonderful place to behold the nature's splendor and admire the armed forces that stand without the fear of sun, rain or snow to guard their country.
