The high altitude Ha is one of the 20 Dzongkhag or District in Bhutan, lies south of Paro valley. Until 2001 visiting Ha valley was restricted for foreign nationals. Ha is quite underdeveloped in compare to Thimpu, Bumthang and Paro districts.
The prime attractions to visit this steep North-South narrow floored Ha valley are to drive up to the Chele – La Pass ( 3,810 mt / 12,500 ft) and the extremely beautiful valley itself. If the weather is fair over the pass then the view of Mt. Chomolhari and Mr. Jichu Drake is really magnificent from here. During April-June season the colourful rhododendron forests with blue pine make the road more beautiful.
Ha valley is situated at an height of 8,800 ft and just an hour drive from Chele-La Pass. Spending a day in this beautiful valley is really exiting and memorable. Three giant hills are looming over the edges of Ha valley popularly known as “ Rigsum Goenpa” – signifying three deities. There are two famous monasteries Lhakhang Karpo ( White Temple) and Lhakhnag Nagpo ( Black Temple) are worth visiting. The central shrine in Lhakhang Nagpo is said to almost identical to that of Jowo temple in Lhasa.
This beautiful valley produces potatoes, wheat, barley and millet and rice in the lower part of of the valley. Yak meat from this valley is considered a great delicacy by the town people of Thimpu. Almost 80% of Ha is covered by deep forests which play an important part in local economy.
