Wangduephodrang / Wangdi

Wangduephodrang is a small Bhutanese town with bustling market and well stocked shops and the last town on the highway before entering into Central Bhutan. Wangduephodrang boasts for its superb bamboo work, stone carving and slate mine, which is a few km from the town. The omnipresence of Wangduephodrang Dzong is the town’s most notable feature.

During the 17th Century, Wangduephodrang played a pivotal role to unify the Western, Central and Southern regions of the country.

The town shares its name with the Dzong, which is situated on the mountain spur above the junction of the Punakha Chu and Tong Chu. The Wangduephodrang  Dzong was built in 1638 AD by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to prevent the incursion from the South.

On the slope of beautiful Phobjikha valley, which is situated on the Eastern side of Wangduephodrang, the famous monastery of Gangtey is located. Established in the 17th Century, Gangtey Gompa is the only Nyingmapa monastery in the Kingdom.
