About Coochbehar :

Coochbehar the district headquarters situated with bordering Assam in the east and neighbouring country Bangladesh in the south. The city held the ancient rich history and culture of the Koch dynasty. History reveals that the ancient territory of Kamrup played an important role in developing the present region of  Coochbehar . Coochbehar is the only planned town in North Bengal having the royal heritage remnants.
 
The area became a part of the Kamta Kingdom or Kamtapur since the second half of the 7th century. The history of Cooch Behar dates back to the period of 11-12th century AD during the reign of Pala-Senas.
 
Viswa Singha, the first ruler and founder  of the Koch Kingdom retrieved Kamtapur and become the king and arguably ruled 1510 to 1530 AD. The early capital of Koch Kingdom ( Coochbehar) was not static and became stable when shifted Cooch Behar town on the bank of Torsha river by Maharaja Rup Narayan on an advice by an unknown saint between 1693 and 1714.

During 1772-1773 AD, the king of Bhutan attacked and captured Coochbehar . To expel the Butanese, the Coochbehar Kingdom signed a treaty with the then East – India Company in 1773 and since then the Kingdom of Coochbehar became a federal ruler under the British until 1949. On  January 19, 1950 Coochbehar was transferred and merged with the province of West Bengal and since then Coochbehar has become a new district on the administrative map of West Bengal.
