Pedong – Village on the Old Silk Route

Pedong derives its name from a Pine Tree which is 30 mts. in height and 200 yrs old and located in the heart of the town. In Bhutanese language "Pe" means Pine and "Dong" stands for Tree, ie. place of Pine Trees. Pedong lies on the ancient Silk Route which connects Lhasa from India via Jelep – La. Pedong witnessed the long standing feud between Lepchas and Bhutias and the ruins of Damsanguddi Fort was the centre of it. After Anglo – Bhutanese warin 1865, British took control over Pedong.

Pedong at an height of 4100 ft is becoming on of the most desired destination in Eastern Himalaya. Pedong is only 21 kms away from Kalimpong and located on Kalimpong – Lava road. Pedong is  a historical place with abundant natural beauty. Pine forests, lush green vallies and over viewing of  Mt. Kanchenjunga and Mt. Siniolchu make beautification to this place. Nathu – La and Jelep – La are closely visible from Pedong. Pedong is an ideal place to take a day trip from Kalimpong or staying a night or two to enjoy the beauty of this unexploited place.

Places to visit in Pedong :

Damsang Fort

This nearly ruined fort which had been built in 1690 by Lepcha Kingdom was the nerve centre of ethnic violence between Lepchas and Bhutias. The another reason to built Damsang Fort was to stop aggression by East India Company. This fort is only 1 km away from Pedong and road goes through pine forest offers magnificient view of surrounding hills and vallies.

Tinchule View Point

This highest point of the region offers breathtaking view of Himalayas. Almost entire Sikkim and Darjeeling hills, part of Tibet and Bhutan hills including awesome view of Kanchenjunga massif and other snow capped peaks. Darjeeling, Gangtok and Kalimpong towns are also visible from this point.

Rikkisum

This is located at the hill top on Pedong – Lava road offers the best view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and other snow clad peaks than any other location of this region. British Govt. made a bungalow in this place just to enjoy the superb beauty of snow capped Himalayas including Sikkim hills, Darjeeling and Kalimpong towns.

Ramitey

Just to enjoy the rare view of river Teesta flowing down through Sikkim with backdrop of  Mt. Kanchenjunga. Longest view of flowing course  of  river Teesta can be watched from here.

Pedong Monastery

Pedong Monastery was built in 1873 by the then Bhutan King is a holy place especially for Bhutanese Buddhists. This monastery is decorated by beautiful pieces of art works and wall paintings.
