Silguri the gate way to the North East India along with Sikkim and Bhutan with in the State of West Bengal. Siliguri is the main commercial town of North Bengal and its importance comes from its strategic location near international and state borders. It is situated on the banks of the river Mahananda. Spread around the foothills of the eastern Himalayas. Though the settlement started initially with the tea plantation and a junction station to change over to the Toy train fo Darjeeling in 1880 it acquired the status of Sub Divisional town in 1907. Though by thirties it had gained weight age as a town, it was confirmed Municipal status only in 1950. the town is an important transportation, trading and educational center. Siliguri is a convenient base for traverl to visit the various Himalayan hill stations like Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Sikkim. Several hotels have come up in the city to cater to both the business and tourist needs. Although it's mainly a commercial and business town, Siliguri has quite a few industries.
