Chapramari forest in Western Dooars is famous for its abundance for Indian elephants. Chapramari became a reserve forest in 1895 and in 1939 the name Chapramari Wildlife Reserve came into effect. Government  of India declared Chapramari forest as Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary  in 1998.

About Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary - Dooars  :  Chapramari forest in Western Dooars is famous for its abundance for Indian elephants. Chapramari became a reserve forest in 1895 and in 1939 the name Chapramari Wildlife Reserve came into effect. Government  of India declared Chapramari forest as Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary  in 1998. Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary  has only 9.6 sq. km covered area. It is located near the National Highway 31 A connecting North East with the rest of India and on the northern side of Gorurama National Park in the Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri district and on the eastern block of river Murti. The name Chapramari most probably derives from “ Chapra” – means a variety of small fish and “ Mari” – means abundant.
