Located on the West Bank of river Ganges & a half an hour drive from Kolkata, Belur Math is one of the finest specimens of temple architecture of India and exhibits a magnificent style that combines the elements from a church a temple and a mosque. Belur Math was set up by Swami Vivekananda, one of the first disciples of famous religious former and the 19th century spiritual seer Ramakrishna Paramahansa as the world headquarters of  Ramakrishna Mission & Math. Swami Vivekananda is largely credited with the concept of the Belur Math & Mission which now has branches all over the world. Belur Math has become the hub of a world wide spiritual movement known as the Ramakrishna movement. Swami Vijananada, a brother monk of Swami Vivekananda and one of the disciples of Ramakrishna and was a civil Engineer, before entering the monastic life designed the temple according to the ideas of Vivekananda and laid the foundation stone on May16, 1935.The massive construction was handled by Martin & Burn Co. The Belur Math was finally constructed on January 14, 1938. The temple was funded by an American disciple of Swami Vivekananda named Ms. Helen Rubel. It has become an international destination. People from different part of India & abroad visit Belur Math and pay homage to Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Sarada Devi & Swami Vivekananda.
 
Belur Math is an ideal place for reflection and spiritual regeneration. Studies of Vedanta form the Primary concern of monks. The monks of   Belur Math lead a disciplined life adept in the art of  ‘Right Living and Right Action’.
 
The Belur math includes within its premises the main Monastery, several Temples, including the Ramakrishna Mandir, the main temple of Belur. The ashes of  Sri Ramakrishna were placed at this spot by his favorite disciples Swami Vivekananda. Besides this there is Swami Vivekananda’s room located adjacent to the old temple, a temple dedicated to Holy mother Sarada Devi. Another attraction for the visitors is the Ramakrishna Museum, established with the support of the National Council of Science Museum items owned by Sri Ramakrishna, Ma Sarada and Swami Vivekananda are kept as Souvenirs in the Museum.
 
Swami Vivekananda, the foremost disciple of Sri Ramakrishna lived the last years of his life in Belur. He consecrated the grounds in 1898 by worshipping the urn containing the secret relies of Sri Ramakrishna.
 
After passing away of Sri Ramakrishna, most of his disciples led a wondering life and they didn’t have any platform fromwhere they could carry out their austerities. Seeing the deplorable condition of his brother monks, Swami Vivekananda with the blessing of Holy Mother Sarada Devi decided to build on order or Math and thus the Ramakrishna Mission was born in the year 1897.
